Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 8)

PAINTING PHASE / FASE DE PINTURA:

Of course, the key factors in this stage are the paints. There are many types, different drying times, incompatibilities and order of application.
First of all I must introduce the project. The project, or we could call it the concept, much determines how the painting will be. In this case the project focuses on making an F-104 that is not a plane but a monument. That’s why this model has no nozzle and the canopy is closed.
The subject is this retired F-104N, flown by Neil Armstrong and exhibited in the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus, Prescott, Arizona.
In addition to the small details of colour in some parts that do not apply to operating aircraft, making a model that captures the essence of this 104, requires a clean, new and glossy paint.
In general, conceiving a project based on a particular plane or colour scheme that we like is reason enough. But in most cases we have freedom to enrich the project by adding an original touch (which can be fantastic or realistic), experimenting with painting, or daring with scratch. It is a pity when we lose the chance to think outside the box.

PREPARING TO PAINT / PREPARANDONOS PARA PINTAR:

The first thing is to clean the work area. Air flows or dusty places are not advisable for painting models.
Order in the workspace is also important. The painting requires an environment safer and wider, without the risk of hitting the model with such elements as a lamp or a bottle; where we can prepare the paint mixes or clean the airbrush without splashing the model; and where everything is within the reach of the hand.
I gather all the paints that I´m going to use and put them in an empty box. It is important to check the good condition of the paints.

The thinners are also very important.
I have been using lacquer paints for some years. I really like their resistance and smooth finish. And I think they are the best choice for a smooth and glossy paint. Of course, lacquer paints as Tamiya spray or Gunze Mr.Color must be diluted with lacquer thinners, not with water. Other lacquer paints as Alclad are already diluted about 90% in their containers.
For all non-acrylic paints, and especially lacquers, you must have good ventilation and an appropriate respiratory protection as a carbon filter mask. These products are harmful in the long term.
The glove is not to protect the hand but the painting. A characteristic of the lacquer paints is that the fingerprints will be marked on the paint even several days before the application although the paint seems perfectly dry. That´s the difference between "drying" and "curing" time.  Using a glove to manipulate the model avoids any problem.

Painting with the airbrush requires several elements to mix the paints, dilute large quantities, transfer paints between containers and clean the brushes. Everything is quite cheap and lasting. The eyedroppers are available in pharmacies and they are perfect for transferring paint and measure mixtures. Small steel or glass jars are available in stores and serve to dilute, mix and clean the paint and tools.
[linked image]

Before we begin painting, it is advisable to make an airbrush inspection in case that it needs cleaning or oiling.
I use lots of acetone for cleaning. For airbrushes that have sensitive rubber sealing there specific airbrush cleaning products, which are less aggressive.
The airbrush cleaning is very important. From periodical rinsing between paint reloads spraying a little of acetone, to the complete disassembly at the end of each session.
The tools that I consider essential for a deep cleaning are the hard bristle brush, the cotton bud, the interdental brush and the deburring needle. I use them in that order because each one manages to access where the former cannot.

When we prepare a paint mixture we must prepare enough for the whole model and for possible retouches. That mixture must be kept in good conditions at least until we finish the model. I use small bottles with dropper purchased at the pharmacy. They have a rubber seal and resist any solvent. They are also reusable. We also can recycle the paint jars.

I know two pure lacquer paints for modelling: MrColor and Tamiya spray. TS and AS Tamiya ranges are excellent airbrushing paints. The problem is to move the paint from the can to the airbrush. I use a valve with a cannula that I took from a lubricant spray.
When the paint leaves the can it has got dissolved propellant so we must let it breathe before use it. For a new spray can I discovered that we must leave the paint overnight to release all the propellant. To shake the paint before the release of the propellant causes sudden eruptions of foam!
I chose a gloss white spray from Tamiya to paint the overall colour of the model.

I use a B-17 wing as a test subject for painting. This wing has a colour and a type of plastic identical to the Starfighter kit.
When I try a new technique I always work first in the test wing, and if the result is satisfactory I do it in the model. This test bench works for many things: behaviour of paints and varnishes, performance of the airbrush, appropriate pressure, times of drying, colour test, behaviour of decals, etc.
[linked image]

Whenever is possible we must find a way to attach the model to some kind of handle.
It is not always easy or possible. This time I found a nice and easy way to do it with a piece of foam and a wooden stick.

APPROACH TO THE PAINTING: ZENITHAL LIGHT
PLANTEAMIENTO DE LA PINTURA: LUZ CENITAL

I've been experimenting with the zenithal light for a couple of years and I still have much to discover. What began as an experiment has finished changing my perception of modelling. Now I do not conceive painting a model without some shading to enhance the light effect, at least in the cases where it can be effective.
I remember the figures painting before the zenithal light. One day it appeared and it wiped out everything in an instant. The airplanes are a very different thing and the aviation modellers have other mentality. I don´t think that zenithal light will have much success or popularity in aviation modelling.
Anyway, when I find in front of such a clean and glossy subject I need to complicate the painting in order not to get bored to death.
The zenithal light is one of the least artificial techniques that we can imagine. We only need to observe the reality.
In the next picture I have extracted with Photoshop the variations of the white colour observed in different areas of the aircraft when the lighting is zenithal. The pure white (A) covers the aircraft above the blue strip, except the tail fin that is light grey (B). The stabilizer under-surface is in shadow, but its high position makes to receive reflected light from the fuselage (C), so it has a shade lighter than the fuselage below the blue stripe (E). The lower vertical surfaces receive diffuse lighting from the sky so they have a lighter shade (D) than the more horizontal surfaces of the belly and the under-wing, where the shadow is higher (F). All the surfaces receive coloured light reflected by the blue sky or the beige ground, so the colour of the aircraft is not neutral. I've desaturated the colour samples in the pictures because I am not going to reproduce these effect in the painting, and will prepare the mixtures only with black and white.

The base paint is important for 3 reasons.
First because we need a primer that properly grips to the plastic or resin. Even if the plastic surface has been washed, it is not the best surface for some paints, as the acrylic, to grip.
Lacquer or enamel paints are good base paints because they stick strongly to the plastic, so the probability of chipping when removing the masking is unlikely.
But the lacquer paint is the best because it is chemically more resistant than enamel.
Mr.Surfacer 1200 is a very fine lacquer with a satin finish that allows a good grip to the paint airbrushed over it. Any other light Gunze lacquer paint should work too.
[linked image]

Secondly because the priming can discover some defect on the surface, imperceptible with the bare plastic. If some imperfection appears we can putty and sand before priming again. The priming must have a finish as smooth as the plastic and if at some point the finish is rough I sand and polish until getting a very smooth and satin finish.
I masked the contact points of landing gear parts before painting. Painted pieces do not allow a wielding so strong between pieces as the bare plastic. We could also have fitting problems in certain pieces by thickening due to the several paint layers.
[linked image]

And third, because it also works to unify the surface colours. The airbrush paints use to be quite translucent, especially light colours, and is not advisable to apply thick layers of paint for the sole purpose of achieving a uniform finish. Mr. Surfacer primer quickly covers the black markings of the cyanoacrylate and has got a tone next to the original plastic colour, so with a very fine general layer and insisting only on the black puttied zones, we quickly get a uniform surface.
In short, if the colour of the plastic is dark and the colour of the paint scheme is very light, it is worth using primer. In other cases the same base paint can work as primer if it is lacquer or enamel paint.
I let the primer to dry overnight. That is enough time.
[linked image]

In order to test the paint I did a couple of mixes. The pure white Tamiya spray is of course the colour (A). I mixed the colour (C) with Tamiya´s gloss black and white and colour (E) with a mixture of MrColor.
I didn´t appreciate any difference in quality or drying time. Both lacquers settle quickly while preserving fluidity for a few minutes, allowing the paint to smooth by itself. Either Tamiya or Gunze paints dries to the touch within a few hours, but I always wait at least one day before working with pieces painted with these paints.
I have used the specific thinner for each lacquer. Lacquer paints are airbrushed perfectly up to 50% of solvent.
The objective of zenithal light painting is to reinforce the natural light effect. Part of the shadow contrast is imitated with paint and the rest are the natural lighting effect.
The contrast between light and shadows in a real plane are higher than in a scale model under the same lighting conditions. A possible cause may be the less distance from the model to the ground, which reflects some light to the under-surface. Other reason is that the sun is a more powerful light source than our home lights, so big objects under the sunlight have more light contrast than small objects under a home lighting.
Reinforcing this contrast with paint techniques makes the model to improve the realism and increase the perceived size.
So I will use the mixture (E) for painting (F) areas, mixture (C) for (E) areas, and white (A) for (A) areas. I have included in the picture of MrColor paints a glass marble which I put in the bottles of Gunze and Tamiya to help stir the paint.

PRESHADING / PRESOMBREADO:

Many people make the preshading directly over the plastic or the primer. I understand that it is an effect to be applied over a paint coat, and then softened by spraying more paint over it to achieve the desired effect.
I think it is better to paint the preshading as an intermediate layer. This way, the first coat of paint provides a base for the final colour that the second layer completes, with the preshading between both.
If you preshade before painting a base coat may happens that when you has managed to get the desired colour on the model, the density of the layers of paint is such that the preshading has almost disappeared.
I therefore began by a first thin coat of white base paint.
[linked image]

I used the colour white (A) in the upper half and the mix (C) in the lower half. That is a simplification of what will be the zenithal painting. It is enough at the moment.

After a day of drying I faced the great problem of painting glossy models: the surface.
Gloss surfaces are simply smoother than flat surfaces. Everything is matter of the surface texture of the paint. If we polish a flat surface, it will become glossy. And it is always much easier to cover with flat paint a glossy surface than the opposite. The best to make a layer of paint or varnish perfectly glossy is that the previous layer is very smooth and shiny.
And the rough surfaces are hard to smooth with paint. So I polished the surface sanding with grains from 4000 to 8000 where there appeared orange skin effect.
Lacquer paints are wonderfully sanded and due to the employed grains, the sanding does not pass through the layer of paint.
[linked image]

The most insidious factor is the dust particles and fibres that float in the air. If the painting had a flat finish, it would be mostly invisible. But in a glossy finish they are very noticeable, so must be eliminated with the sandpaper. It is really easy.
[linked image]

The preshading is not an easy technique for an airbrush clumsy like me. First I practiced with the B-17´s wing to find the right distance and pressure. Moreover, it was the first time I preshaded with these paints and this airbrush.
[linked image]

First I masked the tail fin and wings because trying to do the whole preshading at the same time it seemed difficult to me at first thought.
For this preshading I used Blue Gray Smoke from Medea COM.ART acrylic colours. It is like using airbrush inks but with a faster drying and without the problem of spider legs. I applied this paint undiluted but with 20% of “Illustration Base” from Createx. This additive only works with acrylic paints. Without reducing the adherence of the paint, improves fluidity so the paint can be airbrushed better when we use fine airbrushes of less than 0, 20 mm nozzle.
With a very low pressure and at a short distance, I started focusing on the horizontal lines of the upper fuselage.
[linked image]

The preshading of the horizontal lines is which I was more interested in, as it is directly related to the concept of zenithal light.
I always have been more interested in shading (and preshading) only one side of the lines than in simply shading along the lines. The first one creates a contrast that we can use in the different areas of the model by choosing the direction. Thus we create light maps that highlight specific panels or structures, imitate edges and accentuate angles. The classic preshading only highlights the structural lines.
This can be made using masking tape but, with Medea paint I found a solution applicable in most of the panels: airbrushing the paint without masking and then removing the paint of one side using Medea´s airbrush cleaner.
With brush or bud, Medea´s cleaner removes easily the airbrushed paint no matter the time the paint has dried. Glossy lacquer paint helps to remove Medea acrylic easier and is not affected at all by the cleaner. And thanks to the engraving of the panel lines was very easy to clean without crossing the limits. I did not have a single accident in removing the painting.
Preshading with these products gives a great security because mistakes can be removed in an instant with a rag soaked in cleanser and start again any times that we need.
[linked image]

On the under-surface I was not so interested in the contrast. What I wanted was accentuate the shadows because this zone will be covered with a darker colour.
Here I accentuate the vertical lines which, in a long and narrow fuselage like this, are more important.
[linked image]

In the wings I also used the traditional technique with masks. As they are plane it is much easier.
Although Medea´s paints have a better grip than the airbrush inks and dry to the touch after 15 minutes, a gloss surface is too demanding for them. The masking tape may lift the paint but Post-it cards won´t.

The use of Medea´s cleaner to profile the shading involves the cleaning of a whole panel. For minor corrections I airbrushed Medea´s white.

The final result is not a simple preshading that enhances the panel lines. It also includes panel contrast highlights and zenithal light effect.
The finish is also much more elaborated than typical preshading. That´s because I want all these effects work visually before applying the final white coat that will soften the contrast. After that it will be much harder to retouch the effects. So this is the moment to get the exact gradient, blur and contrast effects that we want.

And this is the current state of the patient.
I liked very much the behaviour of Medea Com.Art paints, I loved the performance of the Infinity airbrush and I also discovered a new application of Medea´s airbrush cleaner. It has been a satisfactory process.

  1. Diego, these are incredible techniques. I am reading all stages of this build very carefully. I am interested in the final outcome of the painting too. One question: I am using Gunze acrylics thinned with Tamiya X-20A as my base paint. If I used your preshading technique with Medea paints, can I use their airbrush cleaner to clean up the panels? I fear that the cleaner may destroy acrylic paints. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi Janissary, sorry for the delay, this week is crazy.
I´ve discussed with Ricardo about your question and neither he nor I have tried that before so honestly can´t help. The safe method is using Medea´s cleaner over lacquer paint (Tamiya spray or Mr.color). Anyway it also may work with Gunze´s acrylics but you´ll have to try that.

If you are thinking in purchase Medea´s paint and cleaner only for this, it may not be worthwhile. I get the same result using only masking tape.

Beyond the use for a particular technique, I think that the true interest of Medea´s paint & cleaner is that provides an easy way of partially removing a paint layer without affecting the previous layer. This may allows a lot of interesting effects still to be tried...
So if you enjoy experimenting things this is a nice field.

    Cheers.

  3. Diego, Ola.
Just to check with you. In your description under the 2nd pic. you said that the Tamiya paint you use, is a lacquer paint. And that you use Tamiya lacquer thinner to thin down your Tamiya and gunze paint.

But in the 2nd picture, the paint bottle i see are acrylic paint from Tamiya, and the thinner shown latter is use with the spray cans paint.

I am confused and my question is that, are you using the lacquer thinner also for Tamiya acrylic?.

As fantasic series on how to . Mucho gracias

    Thanks

    Best regards

  4. Hi Bob,
You are right, this paragraph was a little confuse, I have changed it, hope is clearer now. Thanks for the warning.

Answering to your question, yes I use lacquer thinner both for Tamiya lacquer and acrylic paint. The same thing with Gunze.

I don´t consider Tamiya and Gunze acrylics as true acrylic paint. They can be diluted with water but it is not the best dilution to spray them with the airbrush. In my opinion, the best thinner for Tamiya and Gunze acrylics is also the lacquer thinner (Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, Gunze Mr.Color Thinner, Gaianotes lacquer thinner). I call them "semi-lacquers" because they are not as resistant as lacquers once dry, dry faster, but are nicely diluted with lacquer thinner.

Lacquer paints (diluted with lacquer thinner): Tamiya spray, Gunze Mr.Color.
Semi-lacquers (diluted with water, alcohols or Lacquer thinner): Tamiya acrylics, Gunze aqueous (Hobby Color, Mr.Hobby)
Acrylics (diluted with water): Vallejo, Medea, Lifecolor, Createx, Aeromaster...

    Regards.
